Hydrogen instead of electrification? Potentials and risks for climate targets

E-Mail Hydrogen-based fuels should primarily be used in sectors such as aviation or industrial processes that cannot be electrified, finds a team of researchers. Producing these fuels is too inefficient, costly and their availability too uncertain, to broadly replace fossil fuels for instance in cars or heating houses. For most sectors, directly using electricity for instance in battery electric cars or heat pumps makes more economic sense. Universally relying on hydrogen-based fuels instead and keeping combustion technologies threatens to lock in a further fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen-based fuels can be a great clean energy carrier - yet great are also their costs and associated risks, says lead author Falko Ueckerdt from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). Fuels based on hydrogen as a universal climate solution might be a bit of false promise. While they re wonderfully versatile, it should not be expected that they broadl

Using Hydrogen Fuel Risks Locking in Reliance on Fossil Fuels, Researchers Warn

Using Hydrogen Fuel Risks Locking in Reliance on Fossil Fuels, Researchers Warn Electrification of cars and home boilers is best choice to fight the climate crisis, say scientists. May 6, 2021 Using hydrogen-based fuels for cars and home heating risks locking in a dependency on fossil fuels and failing to tackle the climate crisis, according to a new analysis. A woman refuels with hydrogen fuel in Los Angeles. Researchers have calculated that using e-fuels for cars requires five times more electricity than is needed than for battery-powered cars. Fuels produced from hydrogen can be used as straight replacements for oil and gas and can be low-carbon, if renewable electricity is used to produce these “e-fuels.” However, the research found that using the electricity directly to power cars and warm houses was far more efficient.

Dueling Studies Show Antarctic Uncertainty

May 6, 2021 Two new studies showing that if you are uncertain about what is exactly going on in Antarctica, and what it means for long term sea level, you are pretty much keeping up with the science. Scientists struggling to understand the threat of sea level rise on a warming Earth found Wednesday that amid lingering uncertainty, this much is clear: Meeting the goals of the Paris climate agreement remains humanity’s best hope for preserving current coastlines in the 21st century. At the same time, they diverged over the risks posed by the biggest wild card, the Antarctic ice sheet, which contains by far the most ice on the planet and holds the potential to unleash tens of feet of sea level rise.
