âTragically, the reef has suffered extensive losses in recent years through three severe coral bleaching events, fuelled by global heating,â they wrote.
âSafeguarding the reef requires effective global action to reduce carbon emissions. Yet Australia has so far not pulled its weight in this global effort.
âWe therefore greatly appreciate Unescoâs draft recommendation for Australia to urgently address the threat of climate change and welcome the draft reportâs recognition that 1.5C [of global heating] is widely recognised as a critical threshold.â
The scientists said they acknowledged the Australian and Queensland governments had made efforts to address local threats to the reef, including sediment and nutrient pollution at inshore coral reefs, but Unesco was correct to note âwith the utmost concernâ that water quality targets in the governmentsâ 2050 plan had not been met.

World-leading environmental scientists, including Australia’s pre-eminent coral reef experts, have publicly praised UNESCO’s decision to recommend the Great Barrier Reef be rated “in danger”, a move that was slammed by the federal government.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - whose member countries control World Heritage listings - issued a draft “in danger” rating over the health of the Great Barrier Reef, due to poor water quality and the impact of climate change.
Fact check: Does climate protection stifle economic growth?
A popularly held belief maintains that climate protection measures are costly and damage the economy. On the other hand, economic loss caused by climate change runs into billions of dollars. DW looks at the facts. It s the economy, stupid. That phrase was coined by James Carville, a political strategist for former US President Bill Clinton in the successful presidential campaign against George Bush Sr.
These days, any political adviser worth their mettle would make sure their candidates spout off It s the environment, stupid as an election slogan at every opportunity.
The question is whether the two are mutually exclusive or whether economic growth and climate protection are two sides of the same coin.
It’s clear global warming will have a major impact on Europe, but there may be climate demons lurking that scientists are much less certain about.
A POLITICO review of the latest climate science, including a draft of a major new report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, offers a troubling vision of the future for Europe and the wider world, even under temperature rises that are practically inevitable.
But while scientists are increasingly confident of these findings, there are still phenomena and potential impacts that are relatively understudied or harder to predict. We asked some leading scientists to give a sense of the nagging impacts they fear, but don’t fully understand.
