(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Association for Orphans and Vulnerable Children NGOs in Nigeria (AONN) has appealed to the Police to investigate alleged camping of under-aged girls for trafficking and prostitution Lokoja.
Mr Nathaniel Abaniwo, Coordinator of the Kogi chapter of AONN, made the call in a press statement on Saturday in Lokoja.
Abaniwo, who was reacting to the outcome of an investigation by Wadata Media and Advocacy, Abuja, urged the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.
The coordinator said the association’s attention was drawn to a recent investigation conducted by Wadata Media and Advocacy Centre, which revealed how some girls were allegedly being trafficked for prostitution.
Seven children and an adult were kidnapped from an orphanage by unknown criminals outside Nigeria s capital Abuja, police said Monday.
Aged between nine and 14, the children from the orphanage in Abaji were plucked away between 1 am and 2 am on Saturday by a group of about 25 men, Rachel Alaje, owner of Rachel s Home for Orphans and Vulnerable Children, told AFP by text message.
Africa s most populous country has been plagued by kidnappings for years, with criminals largely targeting the wealthy and prominent.
But more recently, the pool of victims has expanded and the vulnerable and poor across the country are now also taken for ransom.
Thursday, 21 January 2021, 14:02 Sharon Hendricks is mourned by family and colleagues.
GEORGE NEWS - The board and staff of Ithemba Lobomi are mourning the loss of their passionate leader, Sharon Hendricks.
The NGO was founded in 2007 within the community of Thembalethu to tackle the high rate of HIV, Aids and TB and to alleviate the burden the disease left on the families.
Board member Brett Utian says Hendricks moved from Cape Town to join the leadership team as CEO in February 2016, faithfully serving the Thembalethu community and the board in this capacity until her passing in January 2021. Anyone with experience within a non-profit organisation will understand the many hurdles and multiple challenges faced when working in this particular sector. It is not an easy job – especially given Ithemba Lobomi s scope of reach to approximately 30 000 beneficiaries with a staff component of over 100.
