Acid attack victims: Burnt, battered, and berated… but not defeated

Despite being an income provider for the family, her husband continuously harassed her and her family for dowry. She suffered the abuse for 14 years after which she decided to move out of her marital home with her children. Later, her husband apologized for his behaviour and asked her to come back on the promise to change his behaviour. Convinced, she returned to his home. But to her surprise, he resumed his harassment. One morning on October 10, 2001, threw acid over her. Suffering severe burns on the face and neck, she lost vision in one eye. Acid also dissolved her one earlobe, leaving her deaf in one ear.

When the young girl spotted something she liked, she politely turned to Leanne Simonsen, who accompanied her as she shopped, and asked if she could have it. Of course, Ms. Simonsen would reply each time. After all, this day was about her. “I would have bought her the whole store if I could have,” Ms. Simonsen said.

Reno County Judge follows plea deal in strangulation murder sentencing

Surviving family members spoke for each other on Friday during the sentencing of a Hutchinson man convicted in the strangulation death of a young mother who was dumped unconscious in a Hutchinson alley last year and died days later. Stacie Parker, the mother of murder victim Lora Beth Stratton, attempted to speak for one of her grandchildren during the hearing before Reno County District Judge Trish Rose, as the children looked on. “I miss my mom,” Parker said, reading a statement for Stratton’s oldest son, Jessie, 11. “I wish I could talk to her. I want to say ‘I love you.’ I want her to say ‘I love you.’”
