Election candidate told don t get involved in Irish politics in racially abusive phone call

A MAN racially abused a General Election candidate in an anonymous phone call by telling him: “Don’t get involved in Irish politics. Irish politics is for Irish people,” a court has heard. Edward Smith (61) made the phonecall to Dublin Fingal People Before Profit 2020 General Election candidate John Uwhumiakpor just weeks before last year’s election. His actions left a “profound effect” on the victim and his family, Balbriggan District Court heard. Smith claimed he consumed alcohol on the day he made the anonymous phone call and “lost the run of himself.” The court heard Mr Uwhumiakpor - who ran in the Dublin Fingal constituency in last year’s General Election -received a phone call to his home in Balbriggan, Co Dublin at 12.26pm on January 29 last year.

County leaders approve VAWA grant application from Scheibmeir

By Jerrie Whiteley Kathy Scheibmeir advocates for victim s services For years, Mona Robnett with the Grayson County District Attorney s Office, asked the Grayson County Commissioner s Court to approve the application for the Violence Against Women Act grant that helps to pay for part of the salary for a domestic violence investigator for the DA s Office.  However, on Tuesday, the person who stepped into Robnett s shoes when she retired made the request of commissioners. The change in personnel was not lost on the court as some of them commented on it being the first time the grant had come up since Robnett retired in October.

The man, who can’t be named for legal reasons, is awaiting sentence for multiple charges, including an attempt to get her to withdraw her statements. During their relationship, the woman suffered a broken arm, multiple black eyes, a broken nose and a serious head injury that needed stitches. The abuse began shortly after the couple started seeing each other. In May 2018, he burned her foot by putting a cigarette out it in the apartment they shared in Dublin.

Murder charge against Limavady man dropped

A Limavady man has been told that he will be sentenced next month for an assault charge linked to the death of Darren McGurk after it emerged a charge of murder has been dropped. Mr McGurk (23) died four days after an altercation at a house in Glenbeg Walk in Limavady in March 2019. Karl Mark John Watson, from Dowland Road in the Co Londonderry town, was initially charged with murdering Mr McGurk on 21 March 2019. At the time, he was in a relationship with Mr McGurk s half-sister. The 34-year old window cleaner was also charged with perverting the course of justice two days later, namely during the course of a telephone call made from a police custody suite instructed a person to relay a message to a witness that the said witness cease in assisting police with their investigation into the killing of Darren McGurk .
