Legislators need to act on sexual assault reforms to protect National Guard troops Perhaps not since the civil unrest of the 1960s and early ‘70s has the value of the Wisconsin National Guard been more evident. Last year, the Guard found itself maintaining the peace on the streets of Kenosha and Madison. During the pandemic, Guard personnel helped augment seriously depleted ranks of poll workers, and they manned COVID 19 testing stations throughout the state. And lest we forget that units are still being deployed to assist our Armed forces abroad in places like Afghanistan. Clearly, the Guard has shown that it is much more than the force that’s called up a couple of times a year when Mother Nature shows her fury with tornadoes, snowstorms and swollen streams and rivers.

Broader perspective on sentencing needed The views of Union City Police Chief Mark Ater published in The Daily Advocate on March 4 deserve correction. Like many debaters, he hand picked convenient facts, argued them to his pre-determined conclusion, and disparaged Prosecutors, Judges and Victim Advocates along the way. Since the Chief failed to attend any of the Court proceedings, he was not thorough in investigating the facts. He had no first-hand knowledge on which to base his viewpoint and opinions (this is a good example why hearsay evidence is not permitted in Court proceedings). However, instead of trying to set the facts straight on this one case, a broader perspective on the law may be helpful to the public.

The Daily Universe The Rape Crisis Center part of The Refuge Utah is a center that provides resources and help for those who are victims and survivors of sexual abuse and/or rape. (Addie Blacker) Orem’s volunteer Rape Crisis Team is a vital resource for those in Utah County who are victims of sexual assault and rape. The Rape Crisis Team is a part of The Refuge Utah, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse, stalking, sexual assault and rape. “There is a higher number of rape cases of BYU students that occur off-campus than on-campus,” said Refuge Utah sexual assault services director Lori Jenkins.
