A Kansas man has been indicted on a federal charge that accuses him of tampering with a public water system in the state.
According to a news release Wednesday from the U.S. Attorney s Office, Wyatt A. Travnichek, 22, of Ellsworth County, faces federal charges of tampering with a public water system and reckless damage to a protected computer during unauthorized access.
The indictment refers to a 2019 incident, alleging that on March 27 of that year, Travnichek knowingly accessed the Ellsworth County Rural Water District’s protected computer system without authorization.
During the unauthorized access, Travnichek allegedly shut down processes at the facility, affecting the system s cleaning and disinfecting procedures, with the intention of harming the Ellsworth Rural Water District No. 1, also known as Post Rock Rural Water District, according to the release.
