Over the past year, we have heard lots of criticism about police. But today, we take a moment to honor some of the best officers in our region.
Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook has handed out awards to several law enforcement officers from our region who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help fight crime in our communities.
These officers or deputies were presented with Meritorious Service Awards in recognition of their outstanding work and leadership in helping reduce crime in our community and in supporting the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative.

YAKIMA, WA â The United States Department of Justice has recognized and awarded Raymond F. Fleck, Supervisory Deputy Marshal (ret.), U.S. Marshals Service, for his Outstanding Individual Contribution to the U.S. Attorneyâs Office-sponsored Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Initiative in the Eastern District of Washington.
PSN is a critical piece of the Departmentâs crime reduction efforts. The program focuses on prosecuting those individuals who most significantly drive violence in our communities. It supports and fosters partnerships between law enforcement, schools, the faith community, and local community leaders to prevent and deter future criminal conduct. In the Eastern District of Washington, the United States Attorney designated Yakima County for this special crime-fighting program in 2017 as a result of the Countyâs high rates of gang and gun-related violent crime.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – Speaking on the subject of gun violence, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Andrew Birge, explained that his office employs an evidence-based, two-pronged approach to violent crime reduction, focusing on prosecuting the most dangerous offenders where there is federal jurisdiction while funding and encouraging law enforcement partnerships with community stakeholders to achieve sustainable and community driven reductions in violent crime.
