With National Safe Boating Week and the release of the 2020 Boating Accident Statistical Report, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages boaters to focus on simple, effective steps that make boating safer. If you plan to enjoy our beautiful waterways, check out MyFWC.com/Boating for boating safety tips. Safety is never optional!
“National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28 and we want to encourage boaters to boat safely while enjoying Florida’s year-round boating season,” said Maj. Rob Beaton, FWC’s Boating and Waterways section leader. “Reminding people to be safe and slow down is our top priority. Nothing can ruin an enjoyable and memorable experience on the water faster than a boating accident.”

National Safe Boating Week is May 22 to 28. This is just one of dozens of “safety weeks” promoted by the National Safety Council – they also have “safety days” and “safety months” – I suppose based on the inherent “dangers” of participating in various activities. “Walking” gets only one day (April 7th), Ladder safety gets a whole month (March.)
So boating must be an activity with only a relatively moderate risk. That’s great, but as most of the articles and news stories suggest when they are printed or aired at this time of year reminding everyone of National Safe Boating Week, boating could be even safer.

National Safe Boating Week is held each year during the week before Memorial Day weekend.
The goal of National Safe Boating Week is to educate the public about safe boating and wearing life jackets, the release says.
In 2020, boating saw a substantial increase, and the TWRA reported an increase in traffic on Tennessee lakes and rivers, the release says.
2020 also recorded the most boating-related fatalities in 37 years, with 32 reported, the release says.
Friday, May 21 is Wear Your Life Jacket to Work day, and boaters can share photos of themselves wearing a life jacket to work or at home on social media with the hashtage #lifejacket2work and tag @boatingcampaign or email outreach@safeboatingcouncil.org.
