The state s first Safe Haven Baby Box was unveiled in front scores of residents, law enforcement and fire officials, as well as politicians and well-wishers at the southeast corner of the newly built fire and police building in Ocala. The occasion, attended by Monica Kelsey, founder and CEO of the Safe Haven Baby Box and Linda Znachko, founder of He Knows Your Name, was to let people know that a parent can leave a child in a safe environment. Every life matters, Znachko said Tuesday afternoon, minutes before Ocala Fire Rescue Chief Shane Alexander removed a black bag used to conceal the box at 505 NW Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

Council approves restroom project

JONESBORO — After city engineers made revisions to reduce the cost, the Jonesboro City Council on Tuesday approved a change in a construction contract for the city’s shooting sports complex. Bill Campbell, the city’s communications director, said the engineers eliminated an attached pavilion between the two restroom buildings, used a less expensive air cooling system and made other cost-cutting measures, to match the quality of similar buildings at Joe Mack Campbell Park. Still, the restrooms mean a $498,312 increase to the value of the contract with Ramson’s Inc. The current phase of the project will now cost $2,547,248. Some candidates for council seats had questioned the need to spend that much money, but they were defeated in the election.

Restrooms on council agenda

JONESBORO — Construction of restrooms at the Jonesboro shooting sports complex will be on the agenda Tuesday for the city council. The council’s finance and administration committee endorsed a change order last week to a contract with Ramson’s Inc. to add the restrooms to the job assignment. At the request of Mayor Harold Perrin and Police Chief Rick Elliott, the council agreed to add $500,000 to this year’s capital improvement budget for the additional project. Elliott he wanted to avoid having to use portable toilets for the first events. Construction of the restrooms had initally been planned for a later stage of construction.
