Why America Can t Rein in Teen Speeding – Streetsblog USA

They’re rebels who need to be paused. The per-mile crash rate for teenage drivers is a whopping four times higher than drivers over 20, according to a new study that mostly blames teen speeding. But some advocates think addressing the problem will take far more than the enforcement and education-based solutions outlined in the report and must include giving young people mobility options besides climbing behind the wheel. In a new report financed by the Ford Motor Company Fund the automaker has been attempting to rebrand itself as a safety and mobility outfit in recent years, to a mixed response from advocates analysts at the Governors Highway Safety Association found that a whopping 43 percent of teenage drivers who killed someone in a car crash in the last four years were speeding, compared to 30 percent of adult drivers.

15 Months After A 4-Year-Old Girl Was Killed In This LA Crosswalk, The City Adds Upgrades

On Monday, we published my reporting on the death of Alessa Fajardo, a 4-year-old girl who was killed by a driver while walking to school with her mother in October of 2019. In the roughly 15 months since Alessa died, her parents, Erica and Jaime Fajardo, have been waiting for the woman who killed their daughter to be held accountable and for the city to make safety improvements on Olympic Blvd. and Normandie Ave. in Koreatown. Shortly after Alessa was killed, city workers restriped the crosswalks at the intersection, but as I reported, further improvements remained pending or unfunded. Then on Wednesday morning, workers with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation installed new safety features at the intersection, including at the crosswalk where Alessa died.

Blanchester residents, council address proposed sidewalk near elementary school

Blanchester residents, council address proposed sidewalk near elementary school BLANCHESTER Some locals are questioning the safety and need for an additional sidewalk. Holly Drummond, who lives across the street from Putman Elementary School, addressed concerns she said she and other residents have about a proposed sidewalk during Thursday’s Blanchester Village Council meeting. The proposed new sidewalk for Baldwin Street is part of the village’s Safe Routes to School project. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) program provides funds to school districts to increase pedestrian activity and infrastructure in the community. “There’s no parking on our side of the street,” said Drummond. “And we see no reason why there needs to be a sidewalk on this side of the street. It just makes no sense to us.”
