RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Colombia’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo has died from viral pneumonia related to COVID-19, the government said on Tuesday, January 26th.
Trujillo was reported infected with coronavirus earlier this month and was later transferred to an intensive care unit.
The Andean country has reported more than 2 million coronavirus infections, as well as close to 52,000 deaths due to COVID-19, the disease it causes . . .

Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo died Tuesday of coronavirus complications, the country s president announced. He was 69.
Trujillo is one of about a dozen sitting cabinet ministers worldwide to have succumbed to the virus that has killed at least 2.1 million people since the outbreak began in China in December 2019.
He was hospitalized in Bogota on January 11 and admitted to intensive care four days later after suffering acute lung function deterioration, according to the defense ministry.
Colombian President Ivan Duque said on Twitter that Trujillo had died at dawn from complications due to Covid-19.

BOGOTA, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Colombia’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo has died from viral pneumonia related to COVID-19, the government said on Tuesday.
Trujillo was reported infected with coronavirus earlier this month and was transferred to an intensive care unit. He died in the military hospital in Bogota aged 69.
“The death of Carlos Holmes fills me with pain,” a visibly moved President Ivan Duque said. “Colombia has lost one of its best men.”
Before serving as defense minister, from where he coordinated military and police operations in the fight against drug trafficking, illegal armed groups, illicit mining and other criminal acts, Trujillo served as foreign minister in Duque’s government.
