Sky News host Chris Kenny says there has been a crucial development and a “twist” today following the intense focus on the alleged rape of former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in Parliament House.
Mr Kenny said the “critical development” was that Ms Higgins “was to make a detailed statement to the Australian Federal Police today to ensure an investigation is re-activated and justice can be done”.
“This is absolutely vital, as you know nearly two years after the event, to get to the truth, to make sure justice is served, so that, if a crime has been committed, a perpetrator is punished and the community protected”.
Mr Kenny also spoke of a “sensational twist” to take place today.
“Now the sensational twist today was that the Defence Minister Linda Reynolds, the person Ms Higgins worked for two years ago and confided in about the alleged rape, was to address the National Press Club today where she would have been questioned on the details of the issue.
The Australian Federal Police took almost two years to inform the government about the alleged rape of a staffer in Parliament House, briefing Minister Peter Dutton just days before the story went public and potentially breaching its own guidelines in the process.
Defence Minister Linda Reynolds is on medical leave and has been taken to hospital.
Ms Reynolds has cancelled her National Press Club appearance which she was due to give on Wednesday.
