Sailor from Winnipeg goes missing after falling overboard, says military

It was returning to Esquimalt, B.C., after being deployed to the Asia-Pacific region. The military says the ship turned back along its route to search once Earle was identified as missing on Monday. Earle’s family has been notified. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan say their thoughts are with the family. “To master sailor Earle’s family and loved ones, we are keeping you in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” Trudeau said Tuesday during a news conference. “And to everyone aboard HMCS Winnipeg, we are standing with you. I know this has already been a very challenging year for those serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.”

The Trudeau government invited the Chinese People s Liberation Army for joint training at the Canadian Forces Base at Petawawa in the province of Ontario last year, months after China s arrests of two Canadians.

One would be hard-pressed at the moment to think of a greaterglobaladversary to Canada than China. As such, it seems like a no-brainer that any sort of joint military exercise with China should be off the table. That now appears to be the prevailing attitude in Ottawa, but it’s lamentable that this wasn’t the obvious consensus a long time ago. Better late than never, I suppose.
