Military Justice System Review – June 1, 2021 Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan discusses the findings contained in the review of Canada’s military justice system. The mandated review was conducted by former Supreme Court justice Morris Fish, who was asked by the federal government in November 2020 to begin the independent review. He concludes that misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces “remains persistent, preoccupying and widespread.” The minister is joined by Anita Vandenbeld (his parliamentary secretary), David Lametti (minister of justice), Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre (acting chief of the defence staff), Jody Thomas (deputy minister, Department of National Defence), and Rear Admiral Geneviève Bernatchez (judge advocate general). The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces say they accept in principle the 107 recommendations made in the review. Implementation will begin in the short term on 36 of them.
