Tories Take Aim at PM s Top Aide Over Vance Allegations as Sajjan Dodges Questions

Tories Take Aim at PM’s Top Aide Over Vance Allegations as Sajjan Dodges Questions OTTAWA The federal Conservatives are taking aim at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s top aide as they press the government over its handling of a sexual−misconduct complaint against general Jonathan Vance. The Tories on Friday tabled a proposed motion calling for Trudeau to dismiss his chief of staff, Katie Telford, after another of the prime minister’s advisers suggested she knew about the allegation against Vance three years ago. Trudeau defended Telford last week even as he told reporters and parliamentarians that no one in his office or Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan’s office knew the allegation against Vance was of a sexual nature.

Salty language by unmuted House leader heard during virtual question period

He appeared to be upset that someone had directed Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan to respond to a question about the cancellation of a defence committee meeting earlier in the day, rather than the committee s chair, Liberal MP Karen McCrimmon. Rodriguez, who was participating virtually in the proceedings, had not muted himself so his salty language was heard by everyone tuned into question period. Oh f -, did you send that to Sajjan? he could be heard saying. Commons Speaker Anthony Rota said the House deserved an apology by whomever uttered the remark; Rodriguez immediately owned up to being the source of the unacceptable language and apologized.

John Ivison: It s clear that the military sexual misconduct crisis is Sajjan s mess

Article content Fears of a Chinese attack on Taiwan are growing; Russian troops have massed on Ukraine’s border; both countries are “pre-positioning” for any future conflict by launching cyber-attacks, according to the most recent official risk assessment. Yet, as these threats evolve, Canada’s military leadership is said to be petrified, in every sense of the word, by the sexual misconduct crisis that has engulfed the armed forces. “It’s turmoil. Every senior uniform person has got their head down and is just hoping for the best,” said one person with intimate knowledge of the Department of National Defence. “It’s as bad, if not worse, than the Somali affair (the 1993 military scandal) and the decade of darkness that derailed the Defence department after it. It’s a big worry from a national security point of view.”
