Department of Defense evaluating selection of Huntsville for Space Command Headquarters

The Department of Defense Inspector General is evaluating the Air Force selection process of Huntsville as the permanent location of the U.S. Space Command Headquarters.
Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville was selected as the preferred location for the headquarters in January.
According to the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, this would bring 1,400 jobs that are a combination of uniformed and civilian positions.
Friday’s announcement from the Department of Defense Inspector General says the objective of the evaluation is to review the basis for selecting Huntsville as the preferred permanent location.
A release from the Department of Defense states the evaluation begins February of 2021. The point of this evaluation is to review the basis for selecting Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal as the permanent location of the Space Command headquarters.

WASHINGTON D.C. â The Department of Defense inspector general has announced plans to investigate the decision to move the home of U.S. Space Command from Colorado Springs to Huntsville, Alabama.
In a memorandum sent to the Secretary of the Air Force, the inspector general said the objective of the investigation is to review the basis for selecting Huntsville, Alabama, as the preferred permanent location of the U.S. Space Command headquarters.
The memo went on to say the Inspector General will evaluate the extent to which the Department of the Air Force, complied with DoD and Air Force policies during the location selection process, used objective and relevant scoring factors to rank the six candidate locations, and calculated the cost and other scoring factors accurately and consistently among the six candidate locations.
Defense Department watchdog will investigate decision to base Space Command HQ in Alabama
The Department of Defense Inspector General will investigate the decision to house US Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal in Hunstville, Alabama, announced Assistant Inspector General Randolph Stone Friday.
The investigation will look at the extent to which the Air Force complied with Defense Department and Air Force policies in the selection process, used objective scoring factors to rank the six possible locations and calculated the cost and other scoring factors accurately and consistently, Stone wrote in the memo detailing the work.
It was widely expected that the Air Force would choose to keep Space Command headquarters at its current provisional location of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Republican who called for the investigation one month ago, welcomed the announcement.
