NMSU contributes to reforestation study urging US to ramp up tree production

In order to realize the full potential of reforestation in the United States, the nation’s tree nurseries need to increase seedling production by an additional 1.7 billion each year, a 2.4-fold increase over current nursery production. Owen Burney, superintendent of the NMSU John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center at Mora, contributed to a new study published by the science journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change. (NMSU photo by Jane Moorman) These numbers, taken from a new study co-authored by a New Mexico State University researcher and 17 other scientists from across the U.S., show the promise of increased nursery output as a way to fight climate change, create jobs, and recover from uncharacteristically severe wildfires.

As Payments Dwindle, Midwest Farmers Drop Out Of USDA Conservation Program

Mary Chris Barth knows how important it is to control the soil in the panhandle of Oklahoma. She’s the child of parents that grew up in the Dust Bowl. When farmers started planting fence row to fence row in the 1970s and removing the native plants from the soil, she remembers farmers trying to control the dust. Barth, a former president of the Beaver County Farm Bureau and a farmer in the area, says some of the soil should have never been touched.

The top 1 percent of wealth earners in the country got 26 percent of those. Fifty members of the Forbes 400 wealthiest Americans garnered some form of farm subsidy. Does this mean that farm subsidies are unfair? Or are they necessary to make food affordable to everyone? Government subsidies to ag have taken myriad forms over history. Armies were the first and greatest of these. The Roman Empire’s famous grandeur was sustained by the feeding grounds of Egypt and Asia Minor. Slavery, enforced by military might, became the greatest ag subsidy of history.
