Congress and the Biden Administration recently have taken substantial steps toward facilitating land-based solutions to global climate change, including measures specifically focused on agriculture. These actions would leverage public and private investments and technical expertise to support farmers and foresters as they adopt both known and novel greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and carbon-sequestering land management practices. These actions also underscore increasing efforts in government and the agricultural industry to find market-based and sustainable solutions to both mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. As the focus on agriculture, forests, and land-use continues, companies in those industries should remain attuned to related risks and opportunities.

The Biden administration is about to embark on a historic mission: to conserve 30 percent of the nation’s land and water by 2030.
Since President Joe Biden announced the target, known as “30 by 30,” in January, there’s been a mix of hope, especially from environmental groups, and apprehension, largely from people who earn a living off of the land. On both sides, there’s a heightened focus on the fact that just 12 percent of American land is within permanently protected areas today. The question is: Where will the rest come from?

Marshall resident Yvonne Girard spent close to 40 years working with area farmers through the Lyon County Farm Service Agency office. She retired at the end of April, but she says getting to know the people she served was something she loved about her job.
Yvonne Girard said one of the great things about her job was the people.
After close to four decades working with area residents through the Lyon County Farm Service Agency office, she got to know a lot of them.
“It got to the point where they would call on the phone and I would recognize their voices,” Girard said. “Not only do you talk about farming, you get to know them on a personal level.”
