A TOTAL of £600,000 was paid out to young carers across Scotland in the first year of a new grant from the Scottish Government. An annual payment of £305.10 is available to young people aged between 16 and 18 who spend an average of 16 hours a week caring for someone who receives a disability benefit. More than 2000 such teenagers received the Young Carer Grant payment – which can be spent on anything they like – in the 12 months from October 2019. One young carer to receive the benefit is Emma. She looks after her mother, who has a long-term health condition that has left her physically disabled.

Job Start Payment: Young workers urged to claim help of up to £400

YOUNG people starting work, or who have started a job in the last three months, including temporary Christmas jobs, are being encouraged to check if they qualify for the Scottish Government’s Job Start Payment. The one-off cash payment of £250 is open to 16 to 24-year-olds who have been out of paid work and on a qualifying benefit for at least six months – the payment also rises to £400 if the person has a child. The job must average 12 hours per week, over a four-week period but it does not need to be permanent. The money can be spent on anything they need such as travel costs, lunches, tools or new clothes.
