Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding of 1 Corps, a strike formation responsible for undertaking offensive operations against both Pakistan and China.
Prior to this appointment, he was posted as Director General Staff Duties at Army Headquarters. He took over from Lt Gen CP Cariappa today.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Katiyar was commissioned in 23rd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment in June 1986, which he later commanded along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in Arunachal Pradesh. He also commanded an infantry brigade along the western borders and a mountain division.

Ramanathan Iyer, a retired Colonel of the South African Air Force and a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force till 1996, lived an extraordinary life and passed away at the age of 69 on March 17 doing what he loved best: flying a military aeroplane. I first came across Rama, as he was popularly called in the IAF, in June 1981 as a cadet at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal. Accosting me one morning in the cafeteria, he said, “You seem to be a serious bloke. Do you know your vital actions before take-off rattle them out and you can go.”
Lt Gen Manjinder Singh takes over as Chief of Staff, Western Command
Jammu, Apr 1 (UNI) Lieutenant General Manjinder Singh on Thursday took over as the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Western Command.
The General laid a wreath and paid homage to the martyrs of Western Command at ‘Veer Smriti’ War Memorial at Command HQ.
General Manjinder Singh is an alumnus of Sainik School Kapurthala, National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy.
The General was commissioned into 19 MADRAS Regiment on 20 December 1986. In an illustrious career spanning over a period of more than 34 years, the General has served in varied sensitive operational sectors and High Altitude Terrain including important Command and staff appointments.

General Manjinder Singh is an alumnus of Sainik School Kapurthala, National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy. The General was commissioned into 19 MADRAS Regiment on December 20, 1986. In an illustrious career spanning over a period of more than 34 years, the General has tenated important Command appointments in varied sensitive operational sectors and high altitude terrains. He has commanded his battalion in an intense counter insurgency environment in J&K, an Infantry Brigade at the line of Control and an Infantry Division as part of Strike Corps.
