CANBERRA, March 4 (Xinhua) The head of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has denied that he was blaming victims of sexual assault when he told first year cadets not to make themselves prey.
It was revealed on Wednesday that Chief of the Defence Force Angus Campbell told recruits at the ADF Academy in Canberra to lower the risk of sexual assault by avoiding the four A s - alcohol , being out after midnight, alone and attractive.
The speech was widely condemned.
Australian of the Year, Grace Tame, a child sexual abuse survivor and victims advocate, said that the advice was not helpful at all.
Sky News host Alan Jones says Chief of Defence Force Angus Campbell is “not a leader” and must hand in his badge because he has “failed too many”.
The Defence Chief was “exonerated by the Brereton report” and wants to “pillory and destroy our vets," according to Mr Jones.
“We now have the Head of the Defence chiefs … [telling] first year cadets not to make themselves ‘prey’ to sexual predators," he said.
Mr Campbell recently presented an address telling cadets they should avoid the "four A's" in order to not make themselves "prey" to sexual predators.
This list of the "four A's" included: alcohol, alone, attractive and being out after midnight.
“And the Defence Force, so out of touch on all things, has supported Campbell,” Mr Jones said.
“No wonder young cadets, male and female, are worried about the culture of the Defence Force".
