Views: 203 Military authorities have dispelled the rumour of mass compulsory retirement of senior military officers, following the appointment of the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Farouk Yahaya. The Acting Director of Defence Media Operation, Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, faulted the claim at a press conference on Thursday at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital. “At this point, you are all aware of the appointment of the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya. This has stirred up a lot of rumours in the media about mass retirements in the military,” he told reporters at the briefing.

Reports that the new service chiefs appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari have hit the ground running is cheery, although that will not take anything away from the enormity of work confronting them. The major focus naturally is the insurgency in the North West part of the country. But recent events have indicated that banditry, kidnapping, murder, rape and other dehumanizing atrocities across the rest of the country deserve no less attention from the new leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The incident happened on Monday night when Igboho stormed the troubled area in Yewaland. However, the spokesman of the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, yesterday told newsmen in Abeokuta that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime. Oyeyemi also disclosed that there have been attacks in the past three days on herdsmen settlements in Yewaland. According to him, the settlements affected have been in existence in the area for many years, in some cases for over 20 years, and inhabited mainly by Nigerian herdsmen of Fulani extraction, some of whom he said were born and brought up in the area, and speak the Yoruba language with proverbs fluently.
