Deontae Lamar Bush, 34, was riding his bike on Galindo when he was killed by the driver of a van where it intersects with  35th Avenue. That 2018 crash galvanized neighbors who had long complained about speeding and an unsafe road design that lead to multiple crashes over the years. Oakland’s Department of Transportation responded with a round of ‘rapid response’ improvements that included refreshed crosswalk markings to increase visibility and more curb ‘daylighting’ at corners to improve viability.

$8 5 million in rent relief is (almost) on the way for Lebanon County

LebTown (Will Trostel) County commissioners learned Thursday that Lebanon County is slated to receive nearly $8.5 million in rental relief for residents unable to pay their housing bills due to the coronavirus pandemic. A separate grant is also pending to assist people who normally live in congregant housing but who are currently living at a local hotel as a way to limit exposure to large groups of people during the global pandemic. In both instances, the commissioners were told the programs have not been finalized and are in what was described as “hurry-up-and-wait” mode. One program will assist renters who can’t pay their landlords while the other is for those individuals who normally reside in congregant housing.

BSU Receives Over $135,000 Rebate From Otter Tail Power for Energy Improvements Made on Campus

BEMIDJI, Minnesota, Feb. 17 Bemidji State University issued the following news: Bemidji State University has recently received an energy efficiency rebate of more than $137,200 from Otter Tail Power Company as part of the company s Conservation Improvement Program. An additional $9,700 rebate was also granted for Bemidji State s participation in Otter Tail s geothermal study. Travis Barnes, director of facilities, said a key component in reducing energy usage is to lay the ground-work for future projects. If we want to put solar panels onto a building, it doesn t make sense to do that if the building has inefficient lighting and outdated electrical control systems, he said. These projects are creating the infrastructure that will make larger projects feasible in the future.

Rich Rifkin: Still a bumpy ride repaving Yolo County roads

Rich Rifkin: Still a bumpy ride repaving Yolo County roads One blessing of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the dramatic increase in cycling for transportation and recreation across the U.S. American commuters who previously took a subway or bus to work feel safer from the virus riding a bike. People whose gyms closed or whose indoor fitness classes were canceled bought new bicycles and are exercising outdoors. I’ve seen a substantial increase in cyclists riding our rural roads. Especially when the weather is nice, it’s common to find twice as many people pedaling to and from Winters, Woodland and Dixon as I would pass on a typical pre-pandemic day.
