When China embarked on its great quest for development through investment, the edifice of the massive foreign direct investment (FDI) was originally founded on the committed stream of investment by the diaspora abroad. In Pakistan’s case, however, the FDI remains low despite various endeavours. The key to spurring investment here would be involving its nine million-strong diaspora. But for that, quashing fears about investment in Pakistan is a must.
Unfortunately, this perception is based on facts rather than myths. Land grabbers and “qabza mafias” have spread their tentacles in most institutions of the state. While Prime Minister Imran Khan has instructed Pakistan’s diplomatic missions abroad to ensure the facilitation and welfare of our expatriate communities, the fact is that most of their serious complaints are about the security of their assets back home, particularly in real estate.

The three-member tribunal headed by its chairman retired Justice Nisar Muhammad Sheikh also directed the Sepa director general to issue a notice inviting the general public for hearing on the EIA of the proposed project.

IT was 1:30 in the morning on June 24, 2021. The tide was low and the moon was full. Hundreds of people were sleeping in their beds in Champlain Towers South. The 12-storey building faced the ocean in Surfside, a strip of reclaimed land off the Atlantic coast in Florida that is dotted with similar high-rise dwellings. Witnesses say that a rumble was heard before the actual collapse. The middle of the building fell first and then in 30 seconds, moments which must have been excruciating for those awoken by the crash in the portion left standing. Then another portion of the building collapsed. If those sleeping in the part that fell died without realising the horror of the moment, those in the part that fell down next would have known just what was happening.
