Forsyth sheriff: I don t have authority to stop evictions Critics say he can and should do more as pandemic worsens

Facing increasing criticism over how his office handles evictions, Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. said he is following the law. It s important to know what your options are if you re dealing with burdensome debt. Source: Stringr I have no authority to supersede what a judge has decreed, Kimbrough said.  Kimbrough held a news conference Monday in response to protests over how he has handled evictions and a recent outbreak of COVID-19 at the Forsyth County Jail. Last Thursday, Housing Justice Now and other groups gathered outside Forsyth County Government Center to protest the fact that people are being evicted in the middle of the pandemic. Protesters said that evicting people is a threat to public safety because it leaves those people vulnerable to contracting COVID-19.

68 cases of COVID-19 reported at Forsyth County jail out of 568 inmates tested

Sheriff Kimbrough Speaks about COVID-19 in the Forsyth County Jail Sixty-eight inmates at the Forsyth County Jail have tested positive for COVID-19, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office announced during a news conference Monday morning. That’s an 84 percent increase from the most recent number of 37 inmates that the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported on Friday. The state agency reported then that a total of 48 overall positive cases were at the Forsyth County Jail, including 11 staff members. That total represented the fifth-largest COVID-19 outbreak among 28 correctional facilities listed by DHHS. During the news conference, B. Williams, director of nursing at the jail, said 568 inmates were tested Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday morning, the sheriff’s office had 149 test results back. Out of those 149 test results, 68 came back positive, representing a 45% positivity rate.

COVID-19 outbreak at Forsyth jail increases by 11 cases to 48

The COVID-19 outbreak at the Forsyth County Detention Center has expanded to include another six inmates and five jail staff members. That s up from 31 inmates and six staff members listed in Tuesday s report. In the initial outbreak disclosure on Dec. 4, there were five staff members and four inmates considered as infected. DHHS provides semiweekly reports on long-term care and correctional facilities on Tuesdays and Fridays. It s likely the outbreak total will increase given that county public-health officials began testing all inmates on Wednesday and all jail staff members on Thursday. The jail is at 201 N. Church St. in Winston-Salem. DHHS lists COVID-19 cases and deaths on the day they are confirmed by medical providers and public-health officials, so individuals may have been infected or died days before their case is counted.
