Brian Mossom, 82, served in the Royal Marines for nine years, becoming a corporal. In Maryport, however, he was best known as the man who ran the Poppy Appeal for 14 years, receiving an award for raising more than £70,000. Remembrance Day was special to him. As well as carrying the Navy standard in the main town parade, he would also conduct a service on the quayside earlier in the day to remember those who had died at sea. After retirement from his many years at Pentagon Chemicals, he joined the voluntary Ambulance Service,travelling many miles driving people to and from hospital and other medical appointments.

It s 100 years since the Royal British Legion was founded on May 15, 2021 - and Suffolk has been involved right from the start.
Although celebrations have inevitably been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Suffolk RBL is planning a special centenary service on September 19 at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
Suffolk county chairman Ken Rowbottom said: We have been doing huge amounts of planning and are hoping to go ahead in September.
On the centenary day itself, Saturday, May 15, the RBL is marking its centenary with a special event at the Cenotaph in London, which people around the country will be able to watch via livestream on Facebook.

The Prince of Wales has hailed the Royal British Legion’s (RBL) “constant” support of the Armed Forces community in a video message to celebrate the charity’s centenary.
At 9am on Saturday, the RBL will mark the exact moment of its formation 100 years ago with the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph in London and other towns, cities, and villages across the UK.
Charles’s message commences the day’s celebrations, with the Duke of Cornwall telling the charity: “There are few organisations which hold a place at the heart of society in the way the RBL does.

Share For one hundred years, the RBL has been a constant, through the annual Poppy Appeal, leading the nation in remembrance, and providing a life-long commitment to every veteran and their families. Therefore I wanted, above all, to offer my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all those who have helped build this wonderful organisation we know today, and to all those who will be part of its future.
Charles s video will lead a wealth of tributes from service personnel and members of the Armed Forces community, as well as celebrity supporters including Ross Kemp and Stephen Fry.
A special edition RBL centenary coin will also be used for the coin toss of the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester City at Wembley.
