My Voice: The hard reality of Greater Idaho

The devil is in the details. The devil is also in hard realities. Veteran Mike McCarter, president of Move Oregon’s Border, wrote an opinion piece in local papers supporting MOB, which wants to force 850,000 Oregonians to become Idahoans and force 75% of the land in Oregon into Idaho. This fellow veteran looks at just eight of a thousand devilish details and realities that would result from MOB’s plan. 1. Snowplows. Those plows that keep our highways and freeways open are owned by Oregon. Will Oregon donate millions of dollars of plows to another state? Is Idaho going to spend millions to buy plows and pay drivers to service nearly all the snow country of Oregon, which is now largely paid for by western Oregon gas taxes? Who will keep our highways clear? MOB volunteers?

Oregon Department of Corrections eases tier status at Snake River Correctional Institution

ONTARIO Snake River Correctional Institution is in Tier 2 status as it relates to the spread of COVID-19. It was moved into that category on April 19 and will remain there through at least Thursday, according to the latest update from Amber Campbell, public information officer. At that time, Oregon Department of Correction Officials will determine whether it stays in Tier 2 or gets upgraded or downgraded. Since the onset of the pandemic, there have been 726 COVID-19 cases tied to the facility, with 232 of those being staff members. In the most recent months, the case rate has dropped significantly at the facility. In March, there were a total of five cases, with four of those tied to staff, according to Oregon DOC’s online COVID-case tracker. In April, there were only three cases, with two of those tied to staff.

Corvallis memory care outbreak grows to 15 cases

A COVID-19 outbreak at a Corvallis care facility for dementia patients continues to grow, according to the latest information from the Oregon Health Authority. As of Sunday, there were 15 cases of the disease associated with Willamette Springs Memory Care, according to a weekly update released on Wednesday by OHA. That number was up two from the previous week. Outbreaks at congregate care facilities can involve residents, staff, members of their households or other close contacts. There were a total of about 409,000 reported COVID cases in the U.S. last week. That drop came after cases jumped up earlier this month, Deaths are down, too under 5,000 last week. That s the first time we ve dropped below 5,000 deaths in a week since October. The big key in all of this is more people getting vaccinated. More than 95 million Americans are now fully vaccinated and more than 140 million people have gotten at least their first shot of a vaccine.

There are two very drunk men One had been shot dead The other was on trial a second time for murder

Criminal justice ‘There are two very drunk men.’ One had been shot dead. The other was on trial a second time for murder. Would a new Oregon jury see things differently? Today 7:00 AM Luke Wirkkala , 40, is shown here days after a Deschutes County jury acquitted him of murder and manslaughter in the 2013 death of David Ryder in Bend. It s really the best possible outcome, he said. Anytime you go to trial, as I found out the first (time), is a roll of the dice and it s a scary thing, especially when there s a life sentence hanging over you. Beth Nakamura/Staff
