Jan. 27 An emerging class of toxins increasingly threatens drinking water across South Carolina, but state officials have so far failed to set standards that could protect millions of people. That was the message Wednesday from a coalition of environmental groups that wants the state Legislature to establish limits on the amount of the chemicals allowed in public water supplies. The chemicals, known as PFAS, have in recent years been discovered to threaten water systems across the country. They can spread quickly in water and have been tied to cancer, development disabilities and kidney damage.

(T&D) - Former Bamberg County councilman Kerry Trent Kinard is facing additional sex charges in another county. The S.C. Law Enforcement Division has charged the 49-year-old with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, dissemination of obscene material to a person under 18 and committing lewd or lascivious act upon a child under age 16. The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred in Jasper County when Kinard was between the ages of 22 and 29. Warrants allege that Kinard committed third-degree criminal sexual conduct between August and December 1998 by attempting to have sex with a female 14 years of age or less.

Long-serving small-town South Carolina sheriff retires January 3, 2021 GMT BAMBERG, S.C. (AP) One of South Carolina’s longest-serving sheriffs is officially retiring Monday. Ed Darnell spent 42 of his 48 years in law enforcement leading the Bamberg County sheriff’s office. Darnell, 84, only had to fire a gun once during his long tenure, a warning shot fired into the air, WIS-TV reports. Darnell told the station that he’s aged out of the role, citing changes like the use of computers. He declined to run for re-election in 2020. The outgoing sheriff says he maintained peace by using his personal relationships with the community, connections that he’ll miss in retirement.

The industry he brought to Orangeburg in 1981, Zeus, continues to achieve major success as an internationally renowned tubing manufacturer. And Tourville continues as a major supporter of Orangeburg and its institutions of higher learning.
