New Delhi/Washington : From the owner of the biggest producer of one of the Coronavirus vaccines in India to several senators in the US, a wide range of people have appealed to US President Joe Biden to temporarily suspend the intellectual property rules for the vaccine production.
As the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic intensifies, India has appealed to the WTO to waive off the rules so that it can scale up the Covid-19 vaccine production. The virus which originated in Wuhan in 2019 has killed around 3 million people so far. In India alone, 170,000 people have died due to the contagious disease.
NEW DELHI: The production of indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin will be ramped up significantly and increased to 10 crore doses per month by September, the Department of Biotechnology said on Friday.
Covaxin s production will be doubled by May-June and the department has roped in three public sector companies to increase the capacity of vaccine production, it said.
Few weeks ago, inter-ministerial teams had visited the sites of two main vaccine manufacturers in India to get their inputs on how production can be ramped up.
During this period, there have been extensive reviews and feasibility studies on the plans being discussed with vaccine manufacturers, it said.

Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting 60 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccines as the vaccine stocks have completely run out in the state.
The Chief Minister, in his letter, said that 60 lakh doses are needed to ensure the entire population above 45 years in the state is vaccinated with the first dose in the next three weeks.
As India recorded over two lakh new COVID-19 cases for the second straight day, the Centre on Friday unveiled plans to ramp up output of indigenous vaccine Covaxin ten times to reach 10 crore doses by September and accelerate the manufacture of antiviral drug remdesivir, and also called for increasing the production of medical oxygen. In the wake of reports of shortage of the medical grade oxygen for COVID-19 patients in different parts of the country in the last few days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a comprehensive review to ensure its adequate supply, and said steps should be taken to augment the production. He also asked officials to ensure seamless and free movement of tankers carrying this commodity throughout the country.
