With flags billowing in the breeze, two Cherokee heroes were honored for their illustrious military service during a ceremony at the Cherokee Veterans Park on the morning of Friday, March 12. Lt. Lewis H. Harding and PFC Reuben E. Taylor, both elders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), were honored for their service by the members of the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143.

Local World War II airborne legend Kenneth “Rock” Merritt died Wednesday, officials with the 18th Airborne Corps confirmed.
Merritt, 97, served with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division during key World War II battles and was the 18th Airborne Corps’ first command sergeant major.
He is also the only command sergeant major to serve as the Corps top senior enlisted advisor twice, first selected for the spot from 1962 to 1966 and again from 1973 to 1977.
“We certainly know he did his duty here with all of us,” 18th Airborne Corps officials said on social media. “He was among our nation’s finest soldiers, mentors, and citizens.”

Exercises such as this build a foundation of teamwork and readiness between NATO allies. The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army Contingency Response Force in Europe, capable of projecting ready forces anywhere in the U.S. European, Africa or Central Commands‘ areas of responsibility. Forward-based in Italy and Germany, the Brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build interoperability and strengthen the Alliance.
