Last year was the most difficult year for Colorado Springs hotels and those across the state since at least 1986 as the COVID-19 pandemic hammered the travel industry, according to the Rocky Mountain Lodging Report.
Local hotels filled just half of their rooms in 2020 as many full-service hotels, including The Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain Resort, shut down during the spring amid a statewide stay-at-home order and were hamstrung by capacity limits that banned most meetings for the rest of the year. The 50% occupancy rate was the lowest in records starting in 1986 and down from 70% in 2019, one of the best years for the hotel lodging industry since the late 1990s.
No reservations required: Pikes Peak libraries loosen restrictions
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - As of Tuesday, you no longer need a reservation to get into any of the 15 Pikes Peak Library District libraries.
Even though the libraries remained open on a reservation basis, visitors were unable to browse the aisles and pick-up books on-the-spot. The Old Colorado City location is temporarily closed.
Michelle Ray, the Head of Communications with the Pike Peak Library District, says the district went by COVID case numbers and advice from El Paso County health officials when it came to loosening restrictions. People were really excited to come back in, at some of the libraries there were even lines outside, Ray said.
Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers responds to the announcement about the future home of US Space Command. (Video provided by the City of Colorado Springs)
John Suthers has plenty of economic development wins as mayor a massive Amazon distribution center and Southwest Airlines expanding to Colorado Springs to name two but he called the loss of the U.S. Space Command to Huntsville, Ala., his biggest setback. We haven t had a whole lot of economic development bad news, but this would be my greatest (economic development) disappointment Suthers said during a news conference Wednesday on the headquarters decision.
Suthers was highly critical of the decision, calling it a political favor to Alabama s two U.S. senators, who championed President Donald Trump s efforts to object to electoral votes for Joe Biden by Arizona and Pennsylvania, and Republican U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, who represents the Huntsville area.
