Those are for starters, but I happen to prefer a simpler reason: they are an authoritarian Communist government that suppresses Chinese citizens relentlessly while practicing predatory mercantilist trade practices that negatively impact many countries’ economies. Engagement with the ChiComs – as practiced through US policy toward Communist China before the Age of Trump – has not curbed undemocratic behavior; rather, the ChiComs have been emboldened and enriched by the West’s weaknesses. Did the ChiComs moderate their behavior after the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing? Not so much, according to the at least 1,000,000 Uyghurs who spent time in one of the 380 “detention camps” operating in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. [And if that name isn’t a perfect example of the typical Communist misnomer – “autonomous” – then nothing is!]

Lee Kuxhaus, an Air Force veteran from Dallas and a below-knee amputee, is a member of the Capital Region Nordic Alliance’s paralympic skeleton team. She began training this week in Lake Placid, thanks to a Capital Region organization that provides a safe environment for disabled veterans to learn and compete in a variety of paralympic nordic and winter sports.
Karen Fagan of Troy, director of development for the Nordic Alliance, is serving as Kuxhaus’ main support during her training and competition in Lake Placid. Fagan also is coordinating a tangled web of logistics many of them COVID-related for a team of paralympic bobsledders and sliders from throughout the U.S. gearing up for nationals Saturday and Sunday in Lake Placid.
