The record higher number of sittings, volume of work and major reforms under the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic have culminated in the adoption of the principle by Parliament that Private Members’ Bills should be allowed to fill in the gaping gaps in the country’s laws and meet the needs of the times.
With seven PrivateMembers’ Bills being worked on and two laid before the House, the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, believes the legislature is on the path of achieving major milestones.
So far, the Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and the Road Traffic (Amendment) have been laid before the House and are at the second reading stage.

Barely a week after the declaration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President-Elect of the December 2020 presidential elections, some Governance Experts have made passionate appeals to both the New Patriotic (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be strategic in their appointment of persons to represent them at all levels.

The Governance Experts, who stated their positions in separate interviews with the media in Accra, are, John Otabil, Kofi Amoateng Okrah and Efua Okyere.
Leadership of next Parliament must change -Governance Experts
Barely a week after the declaration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President-elect of the December 2020 presidential election, some governance experts have made passionate appeals to the New Patriotic (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be strategic in their appointment of persons to represent them at all levels.
One of such strategic appointments, they said, was the appointment of a new set of talented members of Parliament (MPs), other than the current leadership, who will lead both parties in the House.
“The expectation of Ghanaians is that a new set of talented MPs be appointed into the leadership of both sides of the next Parliament of the Fourth Republic, other than the existing leadership,” they told the media in Accra.
Parliament reconvenes today after crunch elections
Parliament of Ghana will resume today Monday, December 14, 2020, to continue with legislative business.
This comes a week after the country went to the polls in general elections which recorded a massive loss for many sitting Members of Parliament.
A statement signed by the Director of Public Relations Kate Addo said the Speaker is acting by order 6 of the Standing Orders of the House.
“All Honourable members and staff are to take note and attend the house timeously. Please note that all COVID-19 protocols will be observed at all Parliamentary sitting,” it read.
Ghana’s seventh parliament is currently in its fourth session.
