The Committee on Parliamentary Business has decided to convene Parliament tomorrow (Jan. 19) and day after (Jan. 20), stated the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Students Protest After Memorial for 100K Tamil People Killed in Civil War is Destroyed
At the University of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, a war memorial dedicated to the Tamil people was destroyed over the weekend, resulting in student protests, sudden arrests and a viral Instagram post.
What happened: On Jan. 8, the Sri Lankan authorities bulldozed a monument known as the Mullivaikkal memorial, according to Al Jazeera.
The memorial was built by students on the university’s grounds to commemorate the Tamil civilians who were killed during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It was also built to acknowledge the 10th anniversary of the end of the war.
Member of Parliament Gayantha Karunatilake, had been identified as a close associate of Rauff Hakeem, when he appeared in Parliament on the 05th of January 2021.The MP has volunteered to be subjected to a PCR test along with his family and it has been confirmed that the MP and his family have not contracted the virus, informed the Serjeant-at-Arms of the Sri Lanka Parliament

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane extended his gratitude to the government of South Korea for donating PCR test kits worth USD 3 million to be used in Sri Lanka under the ‘Stay Strong’ campaign to strengthen Sri Lanka’s anti-COVID-19 campaign, the Parliament Media Division stated in a press release.
The Speaker said that such collaborations between countries remind that international cooperation is a very strong mechanism to reduce the impact of global crises. He said this while addressing the formation ceremony of the Sri Lanka – Korea Parliamentary Friendship Association in Parliament, yesterday, the statement read.
