Stop building expensive estates with workers money, NLC warns FMBN

Punch Newspapers Sections Sunday Aborisade, Abuja Published 5 May 2021 The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, has warned the management of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to stop building estates for the super rich with funds deducted from poor workers’ salaries. Wabba stated this on Wednesday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an estate on an expanse of land acquired in Karshi, Nasarawa State, by the Public Complaints Commission branch of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria. Wabba warned the FMBN to avoid a situation whereby poor homeless workers would be forced to park in to expensive houses it was building for rich men in highbrow areas, many of which he added, remained unoccupied.

Miners in Chiatura, Georgia strike to demand pay increase and improved conditions Over 3,000 workers in the Georgian mining town of Chiatura joined an indefinite walkout on April 23 to demand Georgian Manganese grant a 50 percent pay rise, health insurance and environmental protections for the area near the mine. According to the Governance Monitoring Center, drivers working for the company in Chiatura wrote to the Minister of Health listing their demands hiring a lawyer to represent them rather than acting through the union and walked out on April 19. They were joined on April 23 by miners and other workers at Georgian Manganese.

JUSUN apologises to Ngige over unfriendly labour conduct

Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), has apologised to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, over its unfriendly labour approach at a conciliation meeting. Mr Isaiah Adetola, JUSUN’s General Secretary tendered the unreserved apology in a letter dated April 26, and addressed to Ngige. The letter was made available to journalists by Mr Charles Akpan, Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations in the ministry, on Tuesday in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that JUSUN had on April 20, staged a walkout at the meeting called by the minister, including the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), to resolve the ongoing strike by the unions.
