Parliamentary panel members flag concerns over WhatsApp s proposed new privacy policy
Members of a parliamentary panel on Thursday flagged the issue of proposed changes in the privacy policy of WhatsApp and highlighted concerns of Indian citizens, sources said. WhatsApp representatives who appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology said the proposed changes are aimed at bringing in more transparency and the chat and calls on platform still remain end-to-end encrypted, some of the members said.
Some other members who attended the meeting maintained that the company was evasive in its reply on the issue of how it can bring in changes which are not conducive for Indian users. They had no reply, said a member.

New Delhi [India], January 17 (ANI): The Parliamentary standing committee on Information Technology (IT) has summoned officials of social media companies Facebook and Twitter on January 21, in connection with the prevention of misuse of social media.
According to Lok Sabha Secretariat notice, the agenda of the next sittings of the panel will be Evidence of representatives of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and to hear the views of the representatives of Facebook and Twitter on the subject Safeguarding citizens rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space.

New Delhi: In the wake of recent reports of data safety on Facebook and its messaging app WhatsApp and blocking of some handles by Twitter, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has summoned representatives of the two social media sites on January 21 to discuss misuse of such platforms.
The parliamentary committee, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, will hear the views of officials from Facebook and Twitter on the subject- “safeguarding citizens rights and prevention of misuse of social online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space”.
While the main issue is women’s security, members of the panel are likely to pose questions on other misuse of the two social media platforms. Facebook has been under fire recently for reports that data put on WhatsApp, which is owned by the Mark Zuckerberg owned company, will be shared with the parent group.
