A total of 103 retired navy admirals on Saturday issued a declaration criticising the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over its stance on the Montreux Convention, a key international convention governing vessel traffic through the Turkish straits.
The ex-admirals signed the criticism of the government for questioning the future of the Montreaux Convention, saying that the 1936 treaty was a guarantee of peace in the Black Sea, which Turkey borders along with Russia and Ukraine, in their declaration published on secular-nationalist news network Veryansın TV.
The declaration also accused the government of Islamising the army, citing an active-service rear admiral’s visit to the leader of an orthodox Islamic congregation.
