NATIONAL NEWS - Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, believes that South Africa is right on track to roll out its vaccination campaign, which is due to start in a few days.
Addressing Parliament s Portfolio Committee on Health on Friday, Mkhize said the country is ready to give the first COVID-19 jabs to healthcare workers once the vaccines have undergone quality assurance checks.
He has described Monday, 1 February, as an exciting day after the country received its first consignment of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines from India.
“We have indicated that one of the major forms of prevention is the provision of vaccines in order to create immunity amongst our people,” he said.

DURBAN - THE South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) revealed to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health that they were awaiting three clinical trial studies and that they have started authorising the use of ivermectin through their controlled compassionate use access programme.
Sahpra board chairperson Professor Helen Rees said safety was paramount in what they did.
“What we cannot say is that ivermectin saves lives,” said Rees.
She said a lot of drugs had been looked into, and that was when ivermectin entered the fray. Ivermectin looked like it had antiviral activity in the laboratory and looked as if it might have anti-inflammatory activities as well.
The suspension of the sale of alcohol was lifted subject to certain restrictions.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said alcohol will be permitted for on-site consumption in licensed establishments, from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 10pm.
He, however, noted that liquor outlets will be allowed to sell alcohol for off-site consumption throughout the week during the hours of 10am to 6pm only.

Upgrading Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital will go a long way to addressing problems at the healthcare facility, the Portfolio Committee on Health has said.
The committee visited the hospital on Saturday, following a damning report by the Health Ombudsman into the death of Shonisani Lethole.
The report found the hospital had been negligent and was not ready to handle Covid-19 cases.
