SIU investigating PPE corruption worth R14 2bn

The SIU is investigating PPE corruption worth R14.2 billion. While new cases are still coming in, it needs to start with 6% of the investigations. The SIU s Special Tribunal is busy with 15 PPE matters in an attempt to recover R365 million. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is probing alleged corrupt PPE contracts worth R14.2 billion - close to half of the money spent by government on PPE procurement. SIU head Andy Mothibi told Parliament s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on Tuesday that they had made significant progress and impact in investigating PPE fraud. While investigating, new matters were being reported. At the end of April, 6% of the investigations on PPE fraud still needed to be started.

Advocate Doctor Mashabane appointed new DG at Justice and Correctional Services Dept

In a statement on Thursday, Lamola congratulated Mashabane on his appointment. Lamola s spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said Mashabane had served South Africa in numerous capacities in the diplomatic space.  Mashabane served as the Elected Chair of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy from 2018 to date.  He was also South Africa s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations in New York between 2011 and 2015. He also represented the country, which currently holds the chair of the Cybercrime Group of Experts in Vienna.  He was also appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General as one of 25 members of [the] Governmental Group of Experts on Cybersecurity and International Peace and Security.

Zec was also supposed to hold by elections this month after the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe recalled more than 32 MPs and several councillors countrywide aligned to the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa. However, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga barred by-elections citing COVID-19 regulations.
