THERE is an urgent need for government to improve the welfare of teachers before schools reopen, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Primary and Education has said.
This is one of its recommendations contained in a report on the preparedness of schools to reopen for the 2021 academic year.
The reopening of schools was early this year postponed after the country recorded a spike in Covid-19 infections and deaths following a second wave of the pandemic.
Presenting its report before House of Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda, the portfolio committee chairperson, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga said besides revisiting the teachers’ welfare concerns, there was need for government to also prioritise Covid-19 vaccination for teachers since they are frontline workers in the education sector.
The Gauteng High Court has ordered the seizure of R46 million in assets belonging to former Parliamentarian Vincent Smith, including his property, wholly-owned company and his family trust.
Investigating Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Twala said that Smith had been handed a copy of the restraint order directing him to hand over control of his assets to a court-appointed curator.
The restraint order was granted to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) under section 26 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) and extends not only to Smith’s property, and that of his family trust and his company, Euro Blitz 48, but also to a property owned by his daughter, Brumilda Smith, and the property of any other person or entity that received an affected gift under section 12 of POCA.

DURBAN - FORMER ANC MP Vincent Smith has had to hand over his assets, including his property, wholly-owned company Euro Blitz 48 (Pty) Ltd, and his family trust be restrained up to the value of R46 million.
Smith, who has been charged with fraud and corruption relating to benefits he received from state capture-accused company Bosasa, received the court order yesterday.
