Lafourche Parish Council keeps Civil Service Department, discusses need for reforms
Over 200 employees of Lafourche will remain civil servants after a proposal to eliminate the Civil Service Department was discussed, and then withdrawn at the meeting of the parish council Tuesday.
The Civil Service Department, one of about 20 in the state, was created in the 1980s to allow employees of the Parish to do their jobs without political pressure or influence. Civil Service employees cannot work on political campaigns or be hired or fired by the parish president or council.
According to the parish website, Civil Service provides the system and service that enables the parish to make merit-based, quality decisions to attract, develop, and retain a productive and diverse workforce that provides quality services to the citizens of Lafourche Parish.
The List of Mardi Gras Cancellations Continues
At this point in 2021, it seems a foregone conclusion that the upcoming Mardi Gras season is a bust. Even though it s not the first time in history that parades and balls have not happened in Louisiana, it still stings just a little bit (OK, a lot) that we won t have the revelry of our most famous holiday to celebrate this year.
The latest to announce the sad news that Mardi Gras parades are canceled this year is St Charles Parish. Late Thursday, parish officials announced that due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, they are canceling parades that were due to roll in February. The Krewe of Lul was set for February 14th, which is Lundi Gras, and the Krewe of Des Allemands was to roll on Mardi Gras day, February 15th.
Work begins to replace dangerous Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in Vacherie
Work has begun to replace the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in Vacherie, just north of the Lafourche Parish boundary.
The narrow, two-lane bridge has been the site of a number of crashes over the years, including a head-on collision in 2015 that killed two Vacherie women and sparked a push among residents and officials to replace the span with a wider one.
Work on the $11.6 million project will cause intermittent lane closures on La. 20 near the bridge from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 20-29, the state Transportation Department said Wednesday. Motorists will still have access to travel the roadway but should anticipate delays as flaggers facilitate and direct traffic, the agency said in a news release. These closures are needed as construction crews mobilize equipment and install material.
