Volunteers clean up Veterans Memorial Park in Houma

Kirk Griffin, owner of Griffin’s Louisiana Grille, provided volunteers with a free lunch, organizers said.
Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet, who served as a Marine for 22 years, commended the volunteers for their service.
“Despite the rain they got it done,” the retired Marine said. “They took some equipment out there and took care of it. It was a combined effort. These guys are all veterans and were trying to do their part. We have lots of guys who serve in the Marine Corps League who served with some of those guys who lost their lives in Vietnam, so it’s really personal for them.”
Houma Toys for Tots organizer retires after 60 years of giving joy
It was 1960 when a young Marine from Houma named Linwood Liner got involved with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
The 18-year-old, who was on leave from boot camp, volunteered to walk up and down Main Street to ask business owners what toys they could spare.
For the next six decades Liner continued working with the toy drive and eventually became its coordinator.
“It was a worthy cause and I just stuck with it,” the 79-year-old retired master gunnery sergeant said. “Every child should have a smile on their face on Christmas morning. No child should be without a toy. I would have no idea what it would be like not to get something for Christmas.”

Terrebonne sheriff administers oath of office to NAACP officers
Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet became the first elected official to administer the oath of office to members of the Terrebonne NAACP Executive Board.
The president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and members of the executive committee were sworn in at the NAACP headquarters in Houma last week.
The organization holds an election every two years and newly elected officers take the oath of office at the beginning of the year, Terrebonne NAACP President Jerome Boykin said.
Boykin said he invited the sheriff to administer the oath because of his fairness and concern shown to the community.
