In her first speech as Joe Biden s running mate back in August, vice president elect Kamala Harris stressed the importance of family. Family is everything to me, too. And I cannot wait for America to get to know my husband, Doug, and our amazing kids, Cole and Ella, she said. And I ve had a lot of titles over my career, and certainly vice president will be great. But Momala will always be the one that means the most.
When America s future veep married former entertainment lawyer Douglas Emhoff in 2014, she became stepmom to his two children, Cole and Ella, from his first marriage to Kerstin Emhoff. (The two split amicably in 2008, after 16 years of marriage.) Here is what we know about the siblings, who are actually the ones who came up with Harris s beloved nickname, Momala.
Education:
I studied art and design at the School of Visual Art and Parsons School of Design and also have a BA in History from Connecticut College.
If you had not chosen your profession, what profession would you choose and why?
I’ve always been a creator and builder of things, so even if I was not designing and developing websites I imagine I would still be making something perhaps as an architect or product developer.
Favorite vacation:
My wife and I took our boys on a two-week trip to Switzerland, Germany and Belgium a few Novembers ago that was fantastic. We were able to see family and friends, eat amazing food, and create incredible memories – from touring a swiss chocolate factory to exploring medieval castles to spending time at the Bastogne War Museum in Belgium, learning about the Battle of the Bulge where my wife’s grandfather fought years ago.
