Utah Supreme Court Justice Constandinos “Deno” Himonas is fond of saying that trying to tackle the growing justice gap with the same strategies is “Einstein’s definition of insanity.”
One key reason he says that is because of the size of the problem. The Legal Services Corp. reported in 2017 that low-income Americans receive inadequate or no professional legal help for 86% of the civil legal problems they face annually.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) filed a consent decree on Tuesday announcing a settlement between it and U.S. Magnesium (USM), “the largest producer of magnesium metal in the Northern Hemisphere,” in the Utah District Court. The magnesium company was accused of illegally disposing of hazardous waste at its facility in Rowley, Utah, and contaminating the Great Salt Lake and its ecosystem, which neighbors USM’s operations.
The settlement between the parties requires USM to build a barrier wall around 1,700 acres of its facility, build a filtration plant to treat the wastewater and remove dioxins, furans, hexachlorobenzene and PCBs, enact protocols to protect workers, and set aside funds for cleanup when the facility is eventually closed. These steps will cost the company about $37 million, and are in addition to the $250,000 penalty agreed to in the settlement.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit America, it devastated our economy. Millions of jobs were lost. Small businesses closed their doors. Domestic retail spending dropped. Industrial production declined. Many of our friends, family members, and neighbors struggled to pay their bills and put food on the table.
Things improved this summer, but we now find ourselves experiencing a spike in cases, locally and across the country. And, once again, the economy is suffering the consequences.
On the day America saw its biggest spike in cases, the Dow dropped hundreds of points. The correlation between the coronavirus and the economy is undeniable.
