GREAT BEND TRIBUNE Pethtel, Frasier head to prison on separate murder convictions Rusty Lee Fraiser Two men convicted of murder charges in separate Barton County cases were released to the Kansas Department of Corrections to begin their prison sentences Friday. Rusty Lee Frasier and Nicholas Pethtel were taken to the El Dorado Correctional Facility’s Reception and Diagnostic Unit (RDU). All male inmates start at the RDU, where they receive orientation and are assigned to a custody classification, appropriate programs and a permanent housing assignment. Rusty Lee Frasier Rusty Lee Frasier, 37, of Aransas Pass, Texas was released to the Kansas Department of Corrections Friday after being sentenced on Nov. 12 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 100 years in connection with the July 2018 premeditated murders of Alfred “Sonny” Carpenter and Pauline Carpenter, both of Wichita, during the Barton County Fair.

Shannon Hoyt Larson, 34, and Kristopher Levimartin Chappell, 39, were placed in the prison’s Reception and Diagnostic Unit (RDU) on Monday, Dec. 14. All male offenders sentenced to the custody of the Secretary of Corrections are received and processed through the El Dorado facility’s RDU, where they attend orientation and are assigned to a custody classification, appropriate programs and a permanent housing assignment.

GREAT BEND TRIBUNE Wintry conditions lead to multiple crashes Tuesday night The Barton County Sheriff’s Office reported wintery weather which caused slick, snow-packed conditions was a contributing factor to three crashes in rural Barton County Tuesday night. At about 6:06 p.m., A 1997 Ford F-150 driven by 31-year-old Duke Turner of Hoisington collided with a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Brian Thompson, also of Hoisington, at the intersection of NW 10 Ave. and NW 30 Road north of Great Bend. Deputies report that Thompson, traveling west on NW 30 Road, was unable to stop at the stop sign at the intersection, and struck the Ford F-150 which was traveling north on NW 10 Ave. The Ford went into the northwest ditch and struck the Lumina in the rear driver quarter panel. The Lumina came to rest facing east in the middle of NW 10 Ave. Megan Thompson, 29, a passenger in the Lumina, was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene by Great Bend Fire Department

Statewide Silver Alert issued for Great Bend man Alert canceled after Carl A. Whiting is located and safe Carl Whiting The Barton County Sheriff’s Office requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation issue a statewide Silver Alert for a man missing from Barton County.   The whereabouts of 64-year-old Carl A. Whiting are unknown, and the public’s assistance is requested to help locate him.  Whiting was last seen at approximately 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, in western Barton County, near K-96.
