CIBC FirstCaribbean donates to charity
Article by May 28, 2021
President and project manager of the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness (BAEH) Kemar Saffrey says COVID 19 has been serving a “double whammy” to his charity.
He explained that due to the attendant economic challenges, more people were experiencing financial hardship and seeking to access the charity’s services while at the same time, donor funds were getting less.
Saffrey’s comments came after receiving the final tranche of the $100,000 donated to the charity over the past five years in equal instalments of $20,000 from CIBC FirstCaribbean.
“I am thanking CIBC FirstCaribbean for its five-year commitment to the project. It comes at a time when due to the COVID-19 pandemic, funds from donors have almost dried-up. Be assured that these funds will be put to the best use in servicing our community,” he said.

The Barbados Lottery has reaffirmed its commitment to help protect Barbadians from the deadly COVID-19 virus with recent donations of PPEs and sanitisation products to fifteen organizations including service, educational and youth-based institutions across the island.
The targeted series of donations which occurred between January and April largely benefited the nation’s youth who have now resumed face-to-face learning, sports organizations, the medical fraternity and the homeless community.
At least six educational institutions were among the fifteen entities that received contributions from The Barbados Lottery. They included: The Learning Centre (home to one of IGT’s ASA computer centres), St. Giles Primary School PTA, Pro Shottas Soccer School, Bayley’s Primary, Hilda Skeene Primary and Gordon Walters Primary schools.
Decades-old legislation expected to curb vagrancy and homelessness
In the coming months, a few less vagrants may be seen roaming the streets. That is because the Ministry of Social Transformation plans to operationalise legislation that will examine the situation of vagrancy and homelessness in Antigua and Barbuda.
A Public Trustee has already been appointed to work with the Family Services Unit and the recently enacted Social Protection Board, which is expected to manage social protection programmes under the charge of the Ministry of Social Services.
The Minister for Social Transformation and the Blue Economy, Dean Jonas said Jose Laurent, a lawyer within the Ministry of Legal Affairs, has already been appointed to serve in the role as authorised by the 1995 Public Trustee Act which he described as “a gamechanger” for Antigua and Barbuda.
