Longstanding tourism practitioner Roseanne Myers was appointed chairman of the Board of Directors of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA).
Myers brings 39 years’ experience to the table as she takes up the post, with the mandate to build and execute a revamped tourism framework that will competitively position Destination Barbados coming out of COVID-19.
In making the announcement on Friday, Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Senator Lisa Cummins said: “This is a critical time for tourism and we need our best thinkers on economics, investment, business, trade, social policy and industrial relations, education, international and community development. We need our youth, entrepreneurs and every single stakeholder all together at the table of policy development and implementation.

Taxi drivers taking precautions

Some senior public transportation operators have dismissed as rumours, information circulating on social media alleging that several taxi drivers have been tested for COVID-19 after one of their colleagues who operates from a west coast property tested positive for the virus.
A message has been making the rounds, saying it was confirmed that “a guy” from a taxi stand at a west coast property tested positive for COVID.
“As a precaution, the other drivers were tested and told to quarantine at home awaiting results. The guys went straight back to work and are still on the job as we speak,” the message read.

As Barbados continues to grapple with rising numbers in local COVID-19 cases, one public transportation sector official is calling for support in the training of taxi, ZR and minibus operators in protocols to help protect them from the infectious virus.
In fact, with one individual who later turned out to be positive having travelled on a taxi to the airport, Chairman of the Alliance Owners of Public Transportation (AOPT) Roy Raphael told Barbados TODAY the time had come for more stringent measures to be put in place for those travelling on public transportation.
“We heard of a case where people stop a taxi and go to the airport and one of them turned out to be COVID-19 positive,” said Raphael, in an apparent reference to a recent incident involving UK national Love Island star Zara Holland and her boyfriend, who reportedly tried to flee the island last week.
