BNSI standards for coconut vending, tourism, green power

BNSI standards for ‘coconut vending, tourism, green power’ Article by April 1, 2021 From coconut vending and tourism to renewable energy, a raft of Barbadian industries are to get a set of standards, the nation’s standards agency said Wednesday. Already labelling standards for coconut vendors are about halfway ready, said Haydn Rhynd, acting director of the Barbados National Standards Institution. He was speaking during the second Barbados Coalition of Services Industries (BCSI) Fish Bowl conversation on Wednesday, under the theme, National Service Sector Development Strategy: Providing a Framework for Inclusive and Sustainable Development. On renewable energy, Rhynd said: “On the backend of that, we have electric vehicles in need of charging stations so at the BNSI we are revising our national building code so that we can speak to charging stations to electric vehicle and the construction of these stations.”

Competitiveness stressed as regional quality framework boosted

Competitiveness stressed as regional quality framework boosted Article by February 12, 2021 Using high tariff barriers and other practices to limit competition from imports into the region is a thing of the past, a CARICOM trade official has said, urging Caribbean economies to focus instead on building their firms’ capacity and become more competitive as they seek to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. This advice has come from Leo Preville, the CARICOM Single Market (CSME) programme manager at the CARICOM Secretariat, who said the launch of a second project under a standby facility should assist regional economies to deal with several external shocks.

No clear position yet on labelling - Barbados Today

No clear position yet on labelling Article by December 12, 2020 Barbadian stakeholders are deadlocked over a common local position on a proposed draft CARICOM Standard for Front-of-Package-Labelling (FOPL). The Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) has said that while there is agreement on the need for a nutrition warning label to help in the fight against chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCD) by informing people about potentially harmful ingredients, local manufacturers do not support the Chilean model recommended by CARICOM. Technical Officer with BNSI Cheryl Lewis is hopeful that there would be consensus soon. “It is still being debated as to what position would be taken on the model. There is going to be a meeting next Friday at which time we hope that we would have a national position as to which format of the model we are going to go forward with,” Lewis disclosed.
