Head of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) Edward Clarke does not believe there is a need for a national lockdown – yet, he said Wednesday.
But he added that if health authorities fail in their efforts to control the spike of COVID-19 cases, then he would be open to the move which he believes must be well thought out.
His comments have come in the wake of calls for a full lockdown of the island with over 200 COVID-19 cases being recorded in the space of two days.

Government has come in for high praise for its overall management of the COVID-19 pandemic over the last nine months, but the umbrella body for trade unions is calling for continued collaboration between the social partners to find solutions to social and economic challenges as a New Year begins.

In his New Year’s message, General Secretary of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) Denis DePeiza said that as the country enters 2021, the Social Partnership – which is made up of Government, private sector, labour and civil society – is still forced to consider ways of responding to the myriad challenges that confronted the nation in 2020.
CTUSAB slams BPSA over job security comments

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) has dismissed a suggestion from the Barbados Private Sector Association that “permanent” and “long-term” job security is increasingly becoming a thing of the past.
President of the umbrella trade union organization, Edwin O’Neal has warned in response to the new, “hostile” working class environment, there must be a re-examination of existing salary scales and overall discussions on remuneration.
The debate began during a press conference on Friday, in which CTUSAB’s top brass accused the private sector of worker exploitation, in the face of increasing joblessness. According to the union, one of the major avenues for this exploitation is through the imposition of unusually short-term contracts, with the expectation that workers, desperate for employment, will accept, according to the Congress.
